Originating in 2004, Cybersecurity Awareness Month was created as a time dedicated to the public and private sectors’ collaboration on raising awareness around the value of cybersecurity. Since then, attacks have soared, and the toll they are taking on society is increasing. The digital age and AI have many advantages, but tech has also given rise to fresh dangers. Attacks on vital infrastructure and our personal data have increased in both sophistication and frequency. Organizations and people are constantly at risk, and using only standard cybersecurity safeguards isn’t enough to stay protected.
In 2022, 493.33 million ransomware attacks were detected by organizations worldwide, and the global average data breach cost was $4.35 million. According to Security Magazine, two of the biggest names affected by cybersecurity breaches last year were Uber and Twitter. Former Uber CSO, Joe Sullivan, was convicted of concealing a felony and deliberately concealing the breach from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). As PR professionals, we understand the damage that can be extremely hard to undo after personal information is compromised and a brand loses the trust of its following. Proactive prevention is always the best method as opposed to reactive damage control.
