Kathleen ‘Kat’ Perry Joins BOCA, Excited to Expand

Why did you choose PR as a career?
I originally thought I wanted to go into journalism when I was deciding my major and applying for schools. But once I got to college, I was super interested in my university’s PR program and took off running in that direction instead. There’s so much overlap between PR and journalism — whether it’s storytelling or knowing what’s current and relevant — so I really found the best of all worlds in PR.

What drew you to BOCA?
One thing (of many!) that really stuck out to me about BOCA was how team oriented everybody was! I’m a huge people person, and I love getting to work closely with and learn from different people. It was clear to me as I was getting to know the team early on that the growth I was looking to achieve would be supported here, and I knew I couldn’t pass it up.

What is your favorite part of your job?
I’ve always been interested in tech and seeing how it continues to evolve and shape our world, especially growing up in the San Francisco area. Along with getting to work with so many fantastic people in the industry, and always being updated in all things media, PR has also introduced me to people and companies who are innovating and influencing tech every day and has allowed me to see the changes happening in real time.

What do you do for fun?
Recently in my free time, I’ve been free climbing everything from The Alps to city skylines. I’ve gotten super good and have even begun competing for time-breaking records. Did I mention this was in the Oculus VR world?? In reality, I love going to hockey games (go Sharks!), spending time with friends over good food, and exploring new places. But until things go back to normal, I’ll have to settle for seeing the outside world from inside my apartment.

What’s your favorite show?
They’re all so embarrassing — I’m currently watching Gilmore Girls (again), Grey’s Anatomy (again), and How I Met Your Mother (also again). I have long gaps of time when I don’t watch TV and I always do other things while the TV is on, so I tend to continue cycling through the same few series I’ve seen a trillion times.

What’s the most interesting place you’ve traveled to and why?
My favorite place I’ve traveled to is the Bahamas. The sand there is white and soft, and the ocean is warm and clear. I’m not sure it’s the MOST interesting, but certainly my favorite and most memorable.

Would you rather be a ninja or a pirate? Why?
I would rather be a pirate than a ninja because I would love to travel around on a boat, laying in the sun all day, searching for treasure.

Tell us something interesting about yourself that we might not guess.
I’m wildly obsessed with game shows, and it’s the only time I get really competitive.

If you weren’t in PR, what would you do?
Before journalism and PR were on my radar, I really wanted to be a nurse! I’m usually very good under pressure and in high-stress situations, and I’m not squeamish, so I thought it would be my calling. I ultimately changed my mind though, because I care a lot about everything, and I wanted to find a job where I could leverage that side of me rather than numb it.
