BOCAteer Spotlight: Diego Vasquez

By February 27, 2022 No Comments

At BOCA, our team is our family and we value the diversity that each person brings to the table. Every month the BOCA beat is going to spotlight one of our hardworking BOCAteers. Get to know us, what makes us unique and what makes us BOCA!

My name is: Diego but my friends call me D (or Freaky_D if it’s on PlayStation lol)

What do you do at BOCA?: I’m editorial director, which is a fancy way of saying I’m a writer.

What is life all about for you?: To me it’s about learning as much as you can about everything, including yourself. That, combined with hard work, always gives you a better chance at moving forward in your life.

What drew you to PR?: After about 12 years in journalism, the publications I worked for for most of that time (Media Life Magazine) shut down. I started freelancing and also landed a temp position in the communications department at a local school district in Minnetonka, a suburb of Minneapolis. At the same time, I was freelancing for Crain’s and did a story on the founder and CEO of NovuHealth, which was a BOCA client. I was later approached about doing some freelance contract writing for BOCA, and the rest is history. What I like most about PR (and journalism) is how many random things you learn about — depending on your clients, you suddenly become a “mini-expert” in topics you may not have known even existed.

What do you do for fun when you’re not killing it at BOCA?: I’m a big sports fan, so I like to watch and play just about any sport (although I haven’t done much of the latter since COVID kicked in). I’m also a bit of a gamer geek, and other hobbies that I’m not really good at include cooking, DJing and producing music.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?: I’ve been lucky enough to travel to a number of places, but a few that I haven’t been to but would love to visit soon include England, Italy, Portugal, Colombia, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Japan, Thailand, Philippines — I love traveling and would visit just about anywhere.

What are you binge watching right now?: The last show I ‘binged’ was the most recent season of “Ozark.” One show I’m currently watching ‘live’ is the new season of “Top Chef.” Depending on my mood and what I’m doing, some of the regular shows I’ve already seen but will re-watch or put on in the background include “Seinfeld,” “Community,” “Parks & Recreation,” and “Gossip Girl.”

What is your number one motivator? Supporting my daughter and wife the best I can will always be my top motivator, followed by helping my extended family and friends whenever possible. For me personally, I switched career paths (from journalism to PR) fairly late and I feel behind where I possibly could be at this point in my life, so my main motivator there is just to learn and grow as much as possible and continue to develop skills that will keep taking me to the next level and beyond.
