Introducing the New Faces of BOCA: Chris Powell

Why did you choose PR as a career?

After graduating from Emerson College in Boston, MA in 2002, I got hired in Palm Springs, CA to be a TV news reporter.  I had no clue what Palm Springs was going to offer, but it was a job and I was hungry to begin my career so “California Dreaming”  was calling my name. And it was the best decision ever. After 4 years as a TV reporter, I worked with many PR professionals during that time and it was a natural transition into the PR business world as a storyteller.  Ever since, I have loved every minute of being a PR professional.

What drew you to BOCA?

I have an entrepreneurial spirit and BOCA lets you explore what you are interested in and encourages being an entrepreneur.  Leading the media strategy and starting a consumer/emerging practice at BOCA is a dream come true and I am on par with “the world is your oyster” BOCA mentality.

What are your plans as head of media strategy?

My biggest plan is to teach the process of storytelling.  As the mouthpiece for our clients, knowing how to formulate a story is a win/win for the reporter, client and BOCA.  Along with storytelling, getting top tier media placements across the agency is always a top goal especially when it starts from an idea, story or pitch we created from scratch.

What are your goals for a consumer/emerging practice?

To create momentum with landing great consumer accounts, but also networking within the consumer/emerging market sector.  Creating a buzz for BOCA within the consumer/emerging market and being a go-to PR agency for this sector is within my 2-year plan.

What is your favorite part of your job?

  • Storytelling
  • Creating events/news
  • Teaching
  • Working with all types of reporters

What do you like to do for fun?

  • Play soccer and do tournaments within the US and Worldwide
  • Wine-tasting
  • Traveling

What’s your favorite show?

  • All time favorite show: Lost
  • Current Show on TV: Grey’s Anatomy

If you weren’t in PR, what would you do?

Honestly this is the career for me and wouldn’t want it any other way. But, my retirement goals is to own a small bar on the beaches of San Diego that sell customized cocktails that are served in pineapples. This must happen.
